The Battle on the Western Front
After the start of World War 1 in 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by first invading Belgium. Between 1915 and 1917 there were several major offensives along this front.
The 1st Battle of Ypres
Ypres, a town in Belgium, was taken by the German Army at the beginning of the war. The Germans attacks took place in the next four weeks but when the French Army came the line was held. About 135,000 Germans were killed or badly wounded.
The Battle of Somme
The Battle of Somme was one of the largest and most-known battles of WWI. It took place on the banks of the Somme River, in France. It was one of the most bloodiest battles of the war. About 1,000,000 men were killed or wounded.
